Hi!
Do you ever get that sudden urge just to write something? I just did! When I was 13 my writing used to be better than it has ever been. It may have been because I was reading approximately a book a day back then and my Finnish vocabulary was just… well huge. Back then I used to write all the time: I wrote poems just for fun just because I was able to. And when everyone else needed an extra paper to plan their essay, I just wrote my essay without it. But as we know nothing can’t last forever and I got into volleyball and totally forgot about reading and writing. I did notice that if you stop doing something, you are not good at it anymore (*pretends to be shocked).
It took me 7 years to start writing and reading again. Precisely one year ago, when I moved to the UK, for some reason I started to read again and write a blog as well. I do enjoy the feeling of being in the “writing bubble” as I call it- just to be with yourself and the story you’re telling. But since then I have read some amazing books and I thought I would share my All Time Favourite -list with you. It is not a long one, I’m quite picky with my books to be frank.
1. J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter
EVERYONE who knows me, knows that my love for this book series is immeasurable. Because of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone I started reading when I was 11. For the young child the books were a way to escape from reality and make everything feel magical. These books and Hogwarts feels like home.
2. Agatha Christie – Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot
She is not called the queen of the crime for nothing. These books are also a big part of my childhood as we used to watch Miss Marple- and Hercule Poirot -movies with my parents from the tv. And me as a bookish child went to bed and read more about these fascinating and “unexpected” murders. These books were also partly the reason why I was so interested about the UK (especially the countryside) already as a child.
3. Tove Jansson – Moomins
This is a VERY Finnish thing, but I still love to read the Moomins books. I always thought the pictures were adorable and the stories made me happy. The books are also simple to read and that’s why many young people choose them as their first book ever to read.
4. Yuval Noah Harari – Sapiens, Homo Deus & 21 lessons for the 21st Century
As these books are fascinating and full of interesting information, they also ask you questions and make you think and discuss the questions with the person sitting next to you. We have had so many interesting conversations with Fraser thanks to these books. I hope he will continue to do more books because his writing style is very clever but easy to read.
5. Aleksis Kivi - Seitsemän veljestä “Seven brothers”
I have always loved history books. They make me understand today’s life so much better and appreciate all the nice things we have. How easy life really is nowadays! Aleksis Kivi is an excellent writer who describes the brutal reality when no one else had courage to do so in Finland.
6. Sally Thorne – The Hating Game
This is a brand new book that I’m just reading, but a VERY good one. I actually haven’t finished it yet, but I’ve been having many good laughs with it. She really can write! I just hope they would make a movie out of this.
7. John Boyne – The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
I think I was 13 when I first time laid my hands in this book. Obviously it was a shock when I realised what this book was about. Nevertheless it’s still a well written book and a very important to read in order to everyone to understand the horrors that happened.
8. Jane Austen – Pride and prejudice
This is one of the best well written “old classic” books in my opinion. Jane Austen is a marvellous writer and she describes the emotion so well that I just wish I could write at least half as good as she can. I love the story and it remains to be my first “old” book I read.
9. Rupi Kaur – Milk and Honey
Even all the famous Instagram influencers are promoting this book on their profiles- it really is a good one. It’s not a long one but it takes a lot of time to understand. This book tells a story and it depends on the reader whether they’re able to understand it.
10. Mark Manson – The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
This is one of those books that make you smile just because it’s so relatable. The writer is amazing just being honest with everything. This book really makes you realise that we all care way too much about what everyone else are thinking about us, when we should all just stop and be happy with ourselves. Just the way we are.
I have of course read many books in my life and these are only the ones that popped into my head when I was thinking of the best ones I’ve read. There are many equally good ones, and I hope you all keep reading and maybe get some ideas from my short list!
I'll speak to you soon!
